Derived from Don ca tai tu and ancient folk music in the Mekong Delta, Cai Luong has undergone more than 100 years of establishment and development, from the first family entertainment performances to large scale performances witnessed by thousands. Gaining popularity amongst the general public in 1916, Cai Luong gradually diversified in terms of roles, scripts, contexts and scale.

It developed a new and unique singing style that has captivated audiences of all ages from the past to the present day. However, this quintessential performing art is also declining amongst young Vietnamese because of the lack of unique and novel scripts to attract audiences, a lack of investment in theaters and new stages, and an absence of actors from the newer generations while veteran artists are forced to retire.
